On 14th March, 1915, the 9th London battalion of 13 Brigade, 5th Division moved from billets in St Jans Capel to the small hamlet of Romarin in Belgium from where two companies went into trenches at Ploegsteert. On 17th March the battalion was relieved and moved back to billets just across the border in Bailleul and then on 22nd March they went to the Cavalry Barracks in Ypres. Hugh Ching died from wounds on 26th March when they were still at Ypres but the exact date on which he was wounded is not known.
